Why The Orlando Magic Do The Deal
Why yes, it does!
Firstly, the Magic need to choose between Mo Bamba and Wendell Carter Jr. Having added Banchero, slotting Carter Jr. down a spot is only a solution for spot minutes. By all appearances, the team prefers Carter Jr. This deal solidifies him as their starting big man of the future.
Moreover, the Magic have too many playmaking guards with questionable jump shots. Markelle Fultz, Cole Anthony, and Jalen Suggs have flashed varying degrees of potential, but unless one of them starts knocking down the there consistently, they’re not a great fit together.
This deal doesn’t have any of them leaving, but it does bring in a more complementary player in Lonnie Walker IV. He’s a strong off-ball player.

Finally, the Magic get a lottery-protected pick here too. They won’t get an unprotected one: Bamba has been too inconsistent to merit that type of return. Still, getting some draft capital in exchange for him is better than nothing.
Of course, Bamba’s inconstancy could scare suitors off. Is he the right acquisition for the Lakers?
