Myles Turner To Get Starting Salary Of $25M Next Contract?

Myles Turner, Indiana Pacers, NBA Trade Rumors
NBA Analysis Network

Throughout the offseason Indiana Pacers center Myles Turner was at the center of NBA trade rumors. This is nothing new to Turner, as he has been involved in trade talks for years. However, for at least a few weeks or months, he can rest easy knowing that he won’t be going anywhere.

Pacers general manager Chad Buchanon made that clear while making an appearance on 1075 Morning Show Kevin and Query. Buchanan shared that Turner will be on the roster come opening night when they face off with the Washington Wizards on October 19th.

What happens after that is anyone’s guess. Turner is heading toward unrestricted free agency, which he has made clear that he wants to test. That is part of the reason that Indiana was showing so much interest in trading him, as they wanted to receive some assets in return instead of losing him for nothing in free agency, especially if he wasn’t planning to re-sign.

Just how much money could Turner be looking at earning in free agency? According to a piece on The Athletic by Shams Charania, Sam Amick and Jovan Buha, Turner is in line for a nice chunk of change.

“Turner, meanwhile, is in the final season of a four-year, $80 million extension he signed in 2018. The talented center’s desire to reach unrestricted free agency in 2023, along with an expected price tag that could begin at $25 million per year, are known to be significant factors in the Lakers’ calculus.”

As a free agent, Turner should have a robust market. Despite dealing with some injuries in recent seasons, he has a skill set that teams covet in big men. On offense, Turner is a capable 3-point shooter. He is hoping to showcase a more diverse offensive game this season with Domantas Sabonis no longer his running mate in the frontcourt.

Defensively is where Turner really earns his keep. He is an elite rim protector, leading the league in blocks per game twice and averaging 2.3 per game in his career. That kind of impact is something teams would pay a pretty penny for, which it sounds like Turner is going to command as a free agent.

Knowing that kind of money could be awaiting him next summer, it makes sense that Turner would like to hit unrestricted free agency. If he plays well this season with the Pacers, he could push that number even higher.
