The Memphis Grizzlies pulled off an impressive 56-26 record during the 2021-22 NBA season. It was enough to finish second in the Western Conference standings.

With Ja Morant suffering a knee injury during their Western Conference Semifinals matchup against the Golden State Warriors, it just wasn’t their year but was a good starting point for the future. It became much more likely that Steven Adams remains an integral part of their plans.

According to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski, Adams and the Grizzlies agreed on a two-year, $25.2 million contract extension. He will earn $17.9 million during the 2022-23 season in what will be the final year of his current two-year, $35 million contract.

“Memphis Grizzlies center Steven Adams has agreed to a two-year, $25.2 million contract extension, tying him to the franchise through the 2024-2025 season, his agent, Darren Matsubara of Wasserman, told ESPN on Saturday.”

Adams is coming off a 2021-22 season with averages of 6.9 points, 10.0 rebounds, and 3.4 assists in 26.3 minutes per game. He was traded by the New Orleans Pelicans to Memphis after the 2021 NBA Draft in a deal that was headlined by Jonas Valanciunas.

Jaren Jackson Jr. is set to miss significant time to begin the 2022-23 season after being diagnosed with a stress fracture in his foot. The impact that Adams makes will be all the more vital for the Grizzlies in Jackson’s absence from the lineup.

When playing alongside Jackson, Adams’ skill-set proves to be an intriguing complement. Jackson spaces the floor and guards out in space well while Adams brings physicality to the paint in ways that are unmatched by Jackson.

An important factor for Steven Adams and the Memphis Grizzlies is that he won’t earn too much money to where he can’t be benched when a smaller lineup is needed. After Jackson is healthy, the small ball lineups with him playing the five have been intriguing.
