The Miami Heat reached an agreement on a contract extension for Tyler Herro ahead of the start of the 2022-23 NBA season. He was set to reach restricted free agency had a deal not been put in place given he’s playing the final year of his rookie contract this season.

According to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski, Herro and the Heat agreed to a four-year, $130 million contract extension. The deal includes $120 million fully guaranteed with the remaining $10 million being determined by incentives.

“Miami Heat guard Tyler Herro — the 2022 NBA Sixth Man of the Year — has agreed to a four-year, $130 million contract extension, his agents, Jeff Schwartz and Mike Lindeman of Excel Sports, told ESPN on Sunday,” Wojnarowski wrote.

Herro is coming off a career year with averages of 20.7 points, 5.0 rebounds, and 4.0 assists in 32.6 minutes per game during 66 appearances. He shot 44.7 percent from the floor, 39.9 percent from 3-point range, and 86.8 percent on free throws.

LATEST NBA NEWS & TRADE RUMORS: Tyler Herro & Miami Heat Updates

An under-the-radar storyline surrounding Herro has been his transparent desire to move into a full-time starting role instead of remaining in a sixth-man role. It seems unlikely that a long-term deal would be reached without there being clarity regarding that situation.

Herro’s most recent performances were underwhelming postseason displays that featured averages of just 12.6 points, 3.9 rebounds, and 2.8 assists. His efficiency also tanked from his regular season results as he shot only 40.9 percent overall and 22.9 percent from deep.

An important criticism that Herro has faced over the years has been his lack of impact defensively. However, his underwhelming playoff results outside of the NBA Bubble have become an undeniable storyline to take into account as well.
