The 2022-23 NBA offseason has been a tough one for the Miami Heat. Their pursuit of All-Stars Kevin Durant and Donovan Mitchell did not go well, as even the great Pat Riley was unable to finish a deal to bring either player to South Beach.

Instead, the Heat will be competing against both as Durant remained with the Brooklyn Nets and Mitchell ended up being traded to the Cleveland Cavaliers from the Utah Jazz.

One player that was a part of those trade negotiations was Tyler Herro. The reigning Sixth Man of the Year is eligible for a rookie extension as he enters his fourth season in the NBA. The two sides have until opening night of the regular season to hammer out a deal.

However, early reports indicate that a deal is unlikely to get completed. The Heat are reportedly not in any rush to get a deal done as they want to keep their options as open as possible. If Herro signs a rookie extension before the season, he will be ineligible to be included in trades.

There is some risk to that approach as Herro would be a restricted free agent in 2023. He could sign an offer sheet with another team but if Miami wanted to keep him, they would have the right to as they could match any offer sheet he may agree to.

Unless Herro was going to take a considerable discount from the Heat, there is no reason for them to rush into signing a deal. A discount seems extremely unlikely as Herro touched on the subject of his contract extension during Media Day earlier this week.

“There’s players across the league that have gotten paid who I know I’m better than. So it’s got to be the right number,” Herro said.

Thus far, five players from Herro’s draft class have signed rookie extensions. Zion Williamson, Ja Morant and Darius Garland all signed rookie supermax deals. RJ Barrett agreed to a four-year, $107 million deal with the New York Knicks and Keldon Johnson signed a four-year, $74 million deal.

Herro could very well be insinuating at one of those players when it comes to the quote that he provided. 11 players from the 2018 draft class signed rookie extensions ranging from $18.7 million up to supermax numbers.

His worth will be in the eye of the beholder. Some are under the impression he can reach that next level, becoming a starter and turning into an All-Star. Alas, some people believe that he has hit his ceiling as he won’t be more than a high-usage combo guard off the bench, which is still an important role.

Depending on which camp the Heat reside in will determine how much money Herro will make on his extension. All it takes is one team to believe he can reach All-Star level to offer him a max next offseason, which would put the ball in Miami’s court whether or not they want to match it.
