The New York Knicks were involved in a lot of trade rumors this NBA offseason as they sought to acquire Donovan Mitchell from the Utah Jazz. Their pursuit of him fell short as Mitchell ended up being traded to the Cleveland Cavaliers.

While they were unable to pull off a blockbuster deal, New York could certainly use a trade. They have logjams at a few spots on the roster and consolidating things would go a long way to alleviating them.

One of the players who was involved in some of those rumors this offseason was small forward Cam Reddish. Reddish was mentioned as a possible piece heading back to Utah in Mitchell proposals, but once that deal fell through, rumors still swirled about Reddish.

The Los Angeles Lakers were reportedly interested in acquiring the No. 10 overall pick from the 2019 NBA Draft. Then, on his birthday no less, there were reports that Reddish had requested a trade from the Knicks and was seeking a larger role elsewhere.

This was news to Reddish. As shared by Knicks and NBA writer Steve Popper of Newsday Sports, Reddish denied ever requesting a trade from New York. He was as surprised as anyone when his phone began going crazy with messages on Instagram about seeking a trade.

Reddish originally requested a trade from the Atlanta Hawks, the team that drafted him, during the 2021 offseason. While it took a little while for a trade to materialize, he was sent to the Knicks in January of this year.

Playing time was what he was seeking, but that was hard to come by with the Knicks as Quentin Grimes was emerging as a rotation player on the wing. Injuries opened up playing time for the Duke product, but a shoulder injury ended his season prematurely.

In training camp, Reddish will be competing for minutes at shooting guard and small forward. He also showed that he can play some power forward, but all available minutes there will likely go to Julius Randle and Obi Toppin.

Minutes will once again be difficult to come by, so it would not have been surprising if Reddish sought another opportunity. But, from the sounds of it, he is instead focusing on improving his game and earning playing time in New York.
