Why The Toronto Raptors Do The Deal

In many ways, these Raptors are at a crossroads. They’re not serious title contenders, but they’re far from the bottom of the league too. They could justify moving in any number of directions.

With this deal, they decide to pursue wins. Frankly, it feels like the right decision – they’re closer to the top than the bottom.

Moreover, this roster is an interesting collection of young and old players. Sure, the Raptors could move their veterans to rebuild around reigning Rookie of the Year Scottie Barnes. On the other hand, we just credited the Raptors for their organizational stability. Realistically, they don’t want to jeopardize that reputation.

With that in mind, Poeltl would make for a great addition. In fact, the Raptors didn’t have a starting-caliber big man in 2021-22. Pascal Siakam routinely started at the 5 position.

It was an interesting direction. This deal doesn’t force the Raptors to abandon it, either. Poeltl could be a key reserve or a spot starter. Either way, he gives them a little more positional versatility. That feels like reason enough for the Raptors to bring Poeltl home.
