Why The Phoenix Suns Do The Deal
With all that being said, Jordan Clarkson does not appear to be a player who needs to start. In fact, he was the 2020-21 NBA Sixth Man of the Year.
That’s perfect for the Suns. After all, their starting backcourt is set in stone. Chris Paul might be 37, but we can assume he’ll be the Suns’ starting point guard next season. Meanwhile, Devin Booker will clearly hold down the starting two-guard spot – he’s the best player on this team.
On the other hand, the Suns’ backcourt depth gets pretty thin after those two. We’re not saying Cameron Payne is a poor player, but he’s not an ideal lead reserve guard for an NBA contender. Following this deal, Clarkson would be stepping directly into his spot. Suddenly, the Suns would boast one of the best three-guard rotations in the NBA.
Meanwhile, they’ll still retain one of the league’s best wing rotations. After all, there’s a reason Crowder is losing his starting spot – Cam Johnson is very good.

On the other hand, he’s not even the best wing on this team. That distinction belongs to Mikal Bridges. Throw Torrey Craig into the mix, and it’s easy to see that Crowder is expendable for this squad.
Is he the right addition for the Grizzlies?
