One of the topics of discussion for the Golden State Warriors entering training camp this NBA season is the contract situations of some of their key rotation players. They have some difficult decisions to make when it comes to contract extensions in the coming years. One of the eligible players is Draymond Green.

The heart and soul of the Warriors has a player option for the 2023-24 season that it is widely presumed he will decline. That means this is likely a contract year for the Michigan State product and he reportedly believes he is worth it and is seeking a max contract.

Green is set to earn $25.8 million this upcoming season and his player option is worth $27.5 million if he opts in. Despite being eligible for an extension, Green is under the impression that a new deal isn’t going to be reached before the deadline.

“I don’t think it will happen, and so for me, I’m just focused on this season and being as great as I can be and as I know I’m capable of being and winning another championship and reaching my individual goals that I have as well,” said Green on Sunday.

A max extension, including this year’s salary, would pay Green $164.2 million over the next five years. That would keep him under contract through his age 37-season, something that probably gives the organization pause.

Green has proven how important he is to their game plan, but he has already shown some signs of slowing down. Injuries have mounted in recent seasons and things are unlikely to get better in that department with age.

In addition to Green, the team is also going to discuss a rookie contract extension with Jordan Poole ahead of the 2022-23 season. If nothing is agreed upon, he will likely be heading toward free agency as a restricted free agent in 2023.

He will be joined there by Andrew Wiggins, who will be an unrestricted free agent. Klay Thompson will be in a similar position to Green next offseason, as he will be entering the final season of his contract.
