Why The San Antonio Spurs Do The Deal 

This deal is between two rebuilding squads. On the other hand, it speaks volumes about where each team is in its rebuild. 

The Spurs are at ground zero. With that in mind, they may want to consider flipping a low-ceiling young player like Vassell if they’re getting someone with star potential in return. Anthony qualifies. 

Granted, he’s a fringe potential star at best. Anthony doesn’t hear his name mentioned with the Ja Morant’s and Anthony Edwards’ of the NBA. Nonetheless, he can create shots out of thin air and employs a wide range of dribble moves. That gives him star upside no matter how you slice it. 

Moreover, he’s not likely to be ready to carry an undermanned Spurs team in year one of a rebuild. That’s also fine. The Spurs are looking to bottom out. They’re in a perfect position to afford Anthony possessions at the expense of team-oriented basketball and efficiency.
