San Antonio Spurs’ Trade Asking Price For Jakob Poeltl, Josh Richardson

The San Antonio Spurs showed their hand earlier this NBA offseason when they traded Dejounte Murray to the Atlanta Hawks. They are open for business when it comes to their veterans as they are fully committed to rebuilding.

San Antonio is focused on acquiring as much draft capital as possible, which they have done a good job of already. Three unprotected first-round picks were acquired from the Hawks to go along with the three extra ones they had gotten in previous trades.

The Spurs also added three first-round picks to the roster in the 2022 NBA Draft, selecting Jeremy Sochan with their pick, Malaki Branham with one from the Toronto Raptors and Blake Wesley with a selection courtesy of the Boston Celtics.

With their attention focused solely on the 2023 NBA Draft, with hopes of landing Victor Wembanyama or Scoot Henderson, the Spurs are looking to make even more moves. They have some good pieces available in Jakob Poeltl, Josh Richarson and Doug McDermott.

While it has been reported that McDermott’s market is lukewarm because he has two seasons guaranteed on his contract, Poeltl and Richardson are on expiring contracts. However, the asking price for both players is very high. LJ Ellis of SpursTalk provided the update on the Spurs’ veterans.

“Sources say Jakob Poeltl and Josh Richardson are the two Spurs players most commonly involved in trade talk. While the Spurs have dropped their asking price for the utilization of their salary cap space, their asking price for Poeltl and Richardson remains high. For Richardson, the Spurs are requesting a first-round pick. For Poeltl, the Spurs are asking for two first-rounders.”

A first-round pick for Richardson is a fair asking price. He is a versatile two-way wing that can defend multiple positions defensively while providing some playmaking and 3-point shooting offensively. That kind of skill set is something contenders can never have too much of.

Two first-round picks for Poeltl, however, could be tough to find. Poeltl broke out last season, putting up career numbers. He has some skills to remain a positive player even with positionless basketball becoming more prevalent, but expecting multiple picks in return for him, especially on an expiring deal, is asking a lot.

Two protected picks may be something a team is willing to part ways with, maybe one unprotected. But securing multiple first-rounders is normally reserved for All-Star level players, which Poeltl has not yet achieved.

Expect lines of communication to be open through the trade deadline should Richardson and Poeltl not get moved before then. San Antonio is focused on the development of their young players and if it happens to result in a ton of losses, so be it.
