In the NBA, it’s generally best to either be contending or rebuilding. If you can’t describe your team with either of those adjectives, you may not have an identity – or a direction. 

Having said that, circumstances are always unique. Realistically, it’s justifiable to be between those two stages. The key is to be trending upwards. If you’re trending downward, you may want to rebuild sooner than later. 

With that logic in mind, the Detroit Pistons may be looking to take a step forward in 2022-23. They could justify it. Between Cade Cunningham and Jaden Ivey, they have two guards with star potential.
