Why The Cleveland Cavaliers Do The Deal
Fans would certainly be surprised to see this deal transpire. Allen is seen as a key piece of the Cavaliers’ future, and rightfully so. With that said, it’s possible that they’ll be making a decision about him sooner than expected.
For the time being, it’s perfectly fine to pair Allen with Evan Mobley in the front court. With that said, in due time, it may become obvious that Mobley, like Allen, is maximized at the center position. This deal has the Cavaliers getting ahead of that concern.
Moreover, it has them landing a much-needed 3-and-D wing in Jones. In fact, he’s already one of the best in the business. Flipping a quality big for a quality wing makes perfect sense when you have two quality bigs.
With Mobley bumped up a position, the Cavaliers can modernize their front court. Perhaps they start Kevin Love alongside him.

Alternatively, they could continue to have Love man the second unit and start Dean Wade. Perhaps they’d still feel they were a piece away. Regardless, they’re filling a position of need at the expense of a position of excess here.
