Why The Orlando Magic Do The Deal
Well, Lillard’s ineligibility to be moved until January 15 is actually quite convenient for Orlando here as well.
If they’re one of the NBA’s worst teams again, this wouldn’t be a wise choice. The Magic would be better off treating 2022-23 as another developmental year and maximizing their own lottery odds. On the other hand, if they’re surprisingly competitive, they could make win-now moves.
For that matter, don’t be surprised if the Magic are, well, surprisingly competitive. Paolo Banchero may be a rookie, but he’s got a grown man’s body – he may be ready to make an impact in year one.
Meanwhile, Franz Wagner surpassed expectations as a rookie. If he does the same as a sophomore, Orlando could be sneakily decent.

Adding Lillard would make them better. In fact, he might be exactly what the Magic need. His elite off-ball gravity would do wonders for both of the wing playmakers we just mentioned.
If he can maintain prime production for another two or three years, he could actually help open a title window for the Magic.
That’s something this organization could justify being impatient to get done.
