In simple terms, the Nets are trading Simmons because they already have two players with elite skills. By contrast, the Knicks have none.
For that reason, they also have the required time to work with Simmons. Yes, they’re also lacking a stretch big man. The pairing between Simmons and Mitch Robinson is suboptimal. On the other hand, the Knicks are simply not working with the same sense of urgency as the Nets are.
This is a pure talent grab for them. They’re capitalizing on a buy-low opportunity to bring in a star-caliber player. With some roster tinkering, it could pay dividends in the end.
Moreover, the Knicks have plenty of assets to tinker with. More specifically, they’ve got one of the best collections of draft capital in the league. If the Knicks wanted to burn a pick or two to bring in players that compliment Simmons (Myles Turner, anyone?) they could afford to do so without blinking an eye.
