Why The Utah Jazz Do The Deal
This may not be a no-brainer for the Jazz. They are taking on some bad money in this deal.
Granted, that’s less of a concern for a rebuilding team. By the time the Jazz are likely to be competitive again, Bertans and Shamet should both be expiring, if not outright expired. Still, it’s not a non-issue either.
Suppose the Jazz’s rebuild is ahead of schedule. If they’d like to make a run at a free agent or two in 2-3 seasons, having their books as clear as possible would be ideal. Nonetheless, this deal is worth their time.
After all, they’re landing an unprotected first-round pick and a swap. For Bogdanovic and Conley, that’s good value. Moreover, if they’re desperate to move these contracts, they’ll be able to – another team will be rebuilding, and willing to take them on with sweeteners attached.
