Every NBA team has an offensive pecking order. Where a team’s players fit into that order will often play a vital role in determining that team’s success.
For example, take the number one option on one of the league’s worst teams. They’re probably not a viable number one option – if they were, their team wouldn’t be one of the league’s worst.
On the other hand, they’re likely talented enough to be the second option on a contender: and if they’re your third option, you may have an NBA champion.
Luka Doncic may be the best offensive player in the NBA. In all likelihood, he’d be the top option on any team in the league. On the other hand, we can no longer say the same about Chris Paul.

That’s not to say Paul’s lost all his value. Even at 37, he’s likely to be a high-impact player in 2022-23. Still, the days of Paul’s team designing their whole offense around his playmaking are certainly over.
