It’s hard to set out criteria for who qualifies as a star player in the NBA.
Sometimes, it’s obvious. There are players in the NBA whose stardom cannot be denied. These are your perennial All-NBA candidates. People who are otherwise indifferent to basketball probably know who they are.
On the other hand, some players have a less distinct status. They aren’t role players – they’ve made an All-Star appearance or two, and maybe even an All-NBA team in a career year. Yet, they aren’t quite on the same level as the league’s top stars.
Ja Morant is a superstar. Nobody can deny his star status. He is, simply put, one of the best point guards in the NBA.

Meanwhile, Julius Randle’s status is less clear. He appeared to be on his way to the same stature in 2020-21, but after a rough 2021-22 season, fans are left wondering exactly who Randle is.
