Firstly, a caveat: this trade can’t be completed until January 15. That’s because the Portland Trail Blazers just extended Jusuf Nurkic. 

Of course, that raises a question – would the Blazers really do this deal? After all, they just extended Jusuf Nurkic! 

Well, the Blazers are a team with needs too. As currently constructed, they need a secondary ball-handler behind Damian Lillard. More broadly, they need to compete for the NBA championship in 2021-22. 

That’s a lofty ambition for this Blazers team, yet it has to be the goal. This team is aging and expensive. Outside of recent lottery pick Shaedon Sharpe, they aren’t exactly brimming with young talent either.
