Why The Oklahoma City Thunder Do The Deal
When we mentioned that this deal felt unrealistic, we were largely referring to the Thunder’s end of it. That doesn’t mean we don’t like it for them: in fact, we think it’s a downright sneaky play.
In this unlikely hypothetical, the Thunder would be entering 2022-23 with Davis, Josh Giddey, and a slew of young, unproven players. Realistically, that isn’t a recipe for success. If the Thunder are concerned with maximizing their lottery odds ahead of the 2023 Draft, this deal shouldn’t compromise that goal.
Moreover, we don’t envision Davis in a Thunder uniform for long. The goal for the organization would be to recoup his trade value. In a best-case scenario, Davis is posting monster stats for a losing Thunder team leading up to the deadline.
In that event, the Thunder can flip him – presumably, for more first-round picks.

To be sure, it’s a gamble. With that said, even if Davis gets hurt again, the loss is mitigated by two ultra-valuable first-round selections. The Lakers’ future is up in the air, so those picks hold unique value. Presti might be happy to land them – hopefully, he just doesn’t hoard them.
