Managing an NBA team requires a lot of balance. In fact, the entire job is a balancing act.
Firstly, you’ve got to balance a roster. Having players with conflicting skill sets is rarely a recipe for success. You need star-level contributors, but you also need players that complement them.
At the same time, you also need to balance the books. It’s difficult to sell ownership on an expensive roster unless it’s highly competitive. Sometimes, cutting costs is as important to a general manager’s job as building a roster is.
With that in mind, sometimes, a player gets overpaid. It happens. Typically, they’ve earned a significant pay raise after a career year. Unfortunately, some players never live up to the expectations of their deal.
