The Philadelphia 76ers made a splash ahead of the NBA trade deadline by acquiring James Harden in a blockbuster trade from the Brooklyn Nets.

While it didn’t result in immediate results in the postseason, as they were eliminated in the second round by the Miami Heat, it did set them up on the right path to contend.

This offseason, Daryl Morey has been putting in a lot of work upgrading the roster to cement the team as one of the elites in the Eastern Conference. He added yet another piece today, as the 76ers agreed to a two-year deal with Montrezl Harrell.

According to Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN, the second year of the contract is a player option. He will bring a much-needed boost to the team’s depth in the frontcourt behind Joel Embiid.

Harrell had some off-the-court issues this offseason as he was charged with marijuana trafficking in Kentucky. But, the charge was dropped to a misdemeanor, which cleared the way for him to be eligible to play this upcoming season.

Harrell is the latest move in what could be described as a Houston Rockets reunion tour this offseason. Morey was the general manager during their recent heyday and brought in numerous players from those teams this offseason.

In addition to Harrell, the team also signed Danuel House Jr. and P.J. Tucker. Harden was integral in all three additions, recruiting his old teammates to the City of Brotherly Love. Taking a pay cut in free agency after declining his player option was also key in the process.

As part of the deal to acquire Harden, the 76ers had to part with backup center Andre Drummond. That left a void in the rotation that they were unable to fill the rest of the season, but Harrell will now be filling that role.
