Why The Charlotte Hornets Do The Deal
Most fans would expect the Hornets to pursue a more traditional big this summer. Fair enough. Still, there’s a case to be made that this is a better course of action.
Firstly, the Hornets, for terrible reasons we won’t get into, will be without Miles Bridges in 2022-23. They will miss his front-court spacing – unless, of course, they make this deal. In that event, they’ll actually improve their frontcourt spacing.
Moreover, landing another small-ball option in Love allows the Hornets to give Mark Williams an appropriate role. He’ll be called on in situations where the team needs conventional big-man play, and they’ll routinely run five-out, small-ball looks as well. That puts the rookie in the best possible situation – they’ll be asking him to play to his strengths.
Love remains a quality player in this league. His floor spacing and passing acumen will be a good fit in what was a strong Hornets offense last season.

Granted, he’s a limited defender – this acquisition will not improve the Hornets in the way that most probably expected them to improve.
It should improve them nonetheless. Does it do the same for the Cavaliers?
