For all of the failed (or semi-failed) number one picks in the NBA’s history, teams still clamor to hear their name called last when the draft’s order is announced.
That makes sense. Number one picks can bust, but statistically speaking, they’re still more likely to be productive than any other selection. Scouting may be an inexact science, but it’s not a complete shot in the dark, either.
With that said, look for the race to the bottom to get particularly hot ahead of the 2023 Draft. After all, it’s headlined by Victor Wembenyama. If you haven’t heard of him, google some highlights, take a moment to pick your jaw up from the floor, and continue reading.
