Why The Phoenix Suns Do The Deal
Look. We know that D’Angelo Russell is not a perfect Chris Paul replacement. At 26, we would know by now if he was about to reach those heights.
In fact, Russell may-or-may-not be the point guard of the Suns’ future following this deal. With the aforementioned core, the Suns should remain competitive in light of this trade, even if they’ll be due for a decline. Still, this deal is about preparing the Suns for the future.
Perhaps Russell is a placeholder. If so, he at least allows the Suns some time to operate on a more organic timeline while pursuing a long-term solution. Furthermore, landing a first-round pick in the process is an opportunity that may pass if Paul looks to be in decline in 2022-23.
The Suns were wise to acquire Paul two summers ago. Moreover, the results have been great. A Finals appearance and a regular season trophy constitute a great two-year run. At the same time, there is likely an expiration date on this partnership.
