Just kidding. That would be trite. Having already talked at length about expectations, let’s talk about a related concept – potential.
Potential is a tricky thing. By its nature, it can’t be completely quantified. After all, it refers to something that will happen in the future. It can be projected, predicted, or anticipated, but at the end of the day, you can’t know what a player’s potential was until they either actualize it, or they don’t.
RJ Barrett has potential. That much is undeniable. With that said, his exact amount of potential is hard to quantify.
During his 2020-21 sophomore season, Barrett appeared to break out, scoring on decent volume with great efficiency. Last season, his volume increased, but unfortunately, his efficiency plummeted.

Furthermore, Barrett is solid in many aspects of basketball. He’s an adequate passer, a reasonable defender, and a solid scorer. On the other hand, he doesn’t excel in any one aspect of the game. Is this a player the Pacers should surrender draft capital for?
