Why The Toronto Raptors Do The Deal
We know what you’re thinking. If the positional overlap between Barnes and Siakam is a problem, why trade for another 4 in John Collins?
Well, the overlap between Barnes and Siakam isn’t strictly positional. It’s also functional. By contrast, Collins, while not as generally talented, is a better off-ball player than Siakam. He’s a better shooter and a more effective roll man in pick-and-roll sets. For those reasons, he’s a better overall fit next to Barnes.
Moreover, the Raptors land their starting center of the future in Onyeka Onkongwu. Granted, he’s not a floor spacer, but he’s exactly the type of versatile defensive 5 teams covet in 2022-23. He’s also much closer to Barnes in age, allowing the Raptors to focus on the future.
Of course, that’s why they’re pleased to be landing two first-round picks here as well. All things considered, this is a significant package. The Raptors land two players under 25 with immense upside and a pair of first-rounders.

If they have any apprehension about Barnes and Siakam’s ability to share the ball long-term, they’d probably have to pull the trigger on this one.
