Plenty of discussions have been held recently about NBA players partaking in exhibitions during the offseason following the unfortunate injury that Oklahoma City Thunder big man Chet Holmgren suffered during the Crawsover Pro-Am in Seattle. The No. 2 overall pick in the 2022 NBA Draft suffered a Lisfranc injury that will require surgery and keep him sidelined for the entire season.
Just a few days later and another injury occurred to an NBA player, this time playing in a FIBA World Cup Qualifying game. While playing for Italy this weekend, Danilo Gallinari suffered a torn meniscus in his left knee.
“It’s tough to talk about basketball after what we saw happen to Danilo,” Italy captain Luigi Datome said after the team’s 91-84 win over Georgia. “We wish him, of course, the best.”
Gallinari was the trailer on a fastbreak and when he rose to make a pass he began to show pain. He hobbled over to the sidelines holding the back of his knee and was led to the locker room.
Gallinari has already been ruled out for the EuroBasket tournament that was set to take place next month. There is a chance that he will miss time with the Boston Celtics during the 2022-23 regular season as well.
Putting a timetable on meniscus injuries isn’t easy as their severity varies. We have seen players return in a few weeks while others were sidelined for months, missing the entire season.
The one positive to come from this is that Gallinari didn’t suffer any other damage to his knee. According to Shams Charania of The Athletic, his ACL and ligaments are all intact, which could help shorten the rehab process.
The Boston Celtics signed Danilo Gallinari this offseason following his trade from the Atlanta Hawks to the San Antonio Spurs. The Spurs, who are entering a rebuild, had no real use for the 34-year-old veteran forward and bought him out almost immediately. After clearing waivers he agreed to join Boston.
