What’s more important for an NBA contender: depth, or star power? 

Most fans would answer that the latter counts for more. Perhaps they’re right. It does seem that basketball games, in comparison to other sports, can be largely determined by one or two mega talents. 

With that said, don’t discount depth as a variable either. Star players, like any other players, get injured.

When they do, having competent replacements on hand can be the difference between a doomed playoff series and a winnable one.

This trade would improve the Clippers’ star power, but it would drain their depth. Meanwhile, it robs the Lakers of one of their best players, but it improves their depth considerably.
