Why The Dallas Mavericks Do The Deal 

The opportunity to kill two birds with one stone is a rare one. When it presents itself, you only have one option: Throw that rock. 

That happens to be exactly what the Mavericks would be doing here. A look at their current roster reveals two immediate needs – secondary playmaking behind Luka Doncic, and defense. 

Draymond Green provides both. His fit alongside the newly acquired Christian Wood is particularly enticing.

Wood is one of the best floor-spacing bigs in the NBA, but he’s a known liability on the defensive end of the floor. Green can cover for him there, while Wood compensates for his inconsistent three-point shooting.

Meanwhile, Green may not be a traditional offensive co-star for Doncic. That’s fine. Doncic does so much on that end that he doesn’t necessarily need one. Green is still a strong playmaking forward – all told, he’ll improve the Mavericks on both ends of the floor.
