Why The Dallas Mavericks Do The Deal
The Dallas Mavericks were able to shed a bad contract in Kristaps Porzingis but they tacked on a couple in return, including Davis Bertans who’s owed over $16 million a year over the next three seasons. They also have Tim Hardaway Jr. signed on for the next three years for over $53 million total.
Not only do the Mavericks have plenty of contracts that they should want to get rid of, but they’re also in need of another ball-handler and playmaker.
After losing Jalen Brunson in free agency to the New York Knicks, Dallas made no moves to replace his production from last season — and more importantly these past playoffs — aside from taking a flier on second-round draft pick, Jaden Hardy.
While Russell Westbrook certainly has his flaws, he’d be more than able to provide the slashing, scoring, and secondary playmaking that Brunson brought to the Mavs last postseason.

And, if he fails to improve upon his stint with the Lakers, his $47 million salary will come off of the books next summer, opening up plenty of flexibility for Dallas to surround Luka Doncic with more talent in free agency.
