Throughout the last few years, it has become commonplace for NBA players to take part in Pro-Ams around the country. It is a chance for fans in cities without professional teams to watch their favorite players play. Most of these Pro-Ams are free to attend as well, which is a nice selling point for some fans who cannot afford to go to an NBA game.

While the games get intense at some points, they are open runs. Unfortunately, just like in an NBA game, injuries can occur and a pretty serious one may have come about during the Crawsover Pro-Am in Seattle.

Chet Holmgren, the No. 2 overall pick in the 2022 NBA Draft out of Gonzaga, was playing in a game there against a team with LeBron James. Holmgren was playing defense against James on a fastbreak attempt and contested his layup at the rim. After the play, he comes away hobbling.

Contests at the rim happen countless times in a basketball game, and unfortunately for Holmgren, this one may have resulted in a serious injury. According to Shams Charania of The Athletic and Stadium, there is fear that Holmgren suffered ligament damage to his foot.

He received further opinions, but the early prognosis is certainly not a positive one for the Thunder’s top pick. It was ultimately reported that Holmgren will miss the entire 2022-23 NBA season due to what was diagnosed as a Lisfranc injury.

“Certainly, we are disappointed for Chet, especially given the excitement he had about getting on the floor with his teammates this season,” Thunder President of Basketball Operations Sam Presti said in a statement. “We know Chet has a long career ahead of him within our organization and the Oklahoma City community.”

“One of the things that most impressed us during the process of selecting Chet was his determination and focus. We expect the same tenacity will carry him throughout this period of time as we work together and support him during his rehabilitation.”

Hopefully, Chet Holmgren can return to form during the 2023-24 season after missing his rookie campaign. He remains an intriguing element to what the Oklahoma City Thunder are building.
