A lot of the focus this NBA offseason around the Miami Heat has been on their pursuit of star players on the trade market. They have been connected to both Kevin Durant of the Brooklyn Nets and Donovan Mitchell of the Utah Jazz.

In both scenarios, Tyler Herro would be involved in the trade package. The reigning Sixth Man of the Year had a strong bounce-back season during the 2021-22 campaign, averaging 20.7 points, 5.0 rebounds and 4.0 assists per game. He had the most efficient season of his career across the board as well setting career-highs in field goal percentage, 3-point percentage and just missed on free throw percentage by 0.2 percent.

Herro picked the perfect time to have such a strong season as he is eligible for a rookie extension this summer. The success he had during the Heat’s run in Orlando Bubble in 2020 finally showed up during the regular season, but there are still some hurdles to jump over when it comes to his contract.

As explained by Ira Winderman of The Sun Sentinel, the Heat are in no rush to work out an extension with the No. 13 overall pick from the 2019 NBA Draft. Trade negotiations are a big reason why.

“Keep in mind that if the Heat wait on an extension, it means Tyler Herro remains trade eligible at any point during the season, potentially a chip to put in play at the February NBA trading deadline. The risk is losing Tyler as a restricted free agent next summer. But that also almost never happens, as evidenced this summer with the Suns and Deandre Ayton. Either way, it appears it will be a decision that will come much closer to the Oct. 18 extension deadline. There simply is no urgency from the Heat’s perspective at the moment.”

Deandre Ayton was expected to part ways with the Phoenix Suns this offseason as a restricted free agent as Suns’ ownership did not believe he was worth a max contract. They were using him as part of their negotiating package to land Kevin Durant, but Ayton ended up signing the largest offer sheet in NBA history with the Indiana Pacers.

Despite all of their perceived hesitations, the Suns matched the deal within hours. Knowing that they will have the ability to do the same next summer, it should be no surprise that the Heat are slow playing negotiations, looking to maximize this opportunity as much as possible.

If an All-Star player remains available heading into the season, Herro will likely remain without an extension. Having him as a potential trade chip is likely worth more to the franchise than locking him into an extension a year early.
