When Kevin Durant originally requested a trade from the Brooklyn Nets in late June, it was reported that at least half of the NBA had reached out inquiring. The Miami Heat and Phoenix Suns were the two teams on Durant’s preferred landing spots list, but the Nets made it clear that they would make a deal with whichever team presented them with the best offer.
The Toronto Raptors have believed throughout the process that they had a strong package that was likely among the best that could be offered. The Boston Celtics also had trade discussions with them, but those talks reportedly didn’t get very far.
The asking price that Brooklyn has set is astronomically high. They want All-Star caliber players, young players with a ton of upside and draft compensation. That isn’t something any team has been willing to come close to, but as more teams get involved, the packages could start improving.
In recent days, more teams have begun emerging as potential suitors for Durant. As mentioned previously, teams have reached out and we are now learning who those teams are. Over at The Athletic, Shams Charania revealed three more teams that are dark-horse suitors for the former MVP.
“The Philadelphia 76ers expressed recent interest in Durant while the Milwaukee Bucks and Denver Nuggets also inquired with the Nets in late June and early July to gauge the price tag, according to sources.”
All three of those teams are already among the contenders in the NBA and would become even scarier with Durant in the lineup. The Philadelphia 76ers feel like an unlikely landing spot given that they already acquired James Haraden, who didn’t always see eye-to-eye with Durant during their time in Brooklyn together.
The Denver Nuggets were reportedly in the market for a big trade earlier this offseason as they want to maximize their window with back-to-back MVP Nikola Jokic. Adding Durant alongside him could very well be the missing piece to get them over the hump.
It is hard to imagine the Milwaukee Bucks would have the pieces to build a competitive trade offer. But adding Durant to a lineup that already includes Giannis Antetokounmpo would be nightmare fuel for opponents preparing for the Bucks.
