Why The New Orleans Pelicans Do The Deal
Again, the New Orleans Pelicans are in full win-now mode heading into 2022-23. Hayes is good, but a steady veteran presence like Mike Conley should be more impactful.
Critics will point to the defensive fit between Conley and McCollum, and they will have a point. We’ve seen small guards struggle together in the past. In fact, we’ve seen both Conley (with Donovan Mitchell) and McCollum (with Damian Lillard) do so themselves.
Nevermind that. For the Pelicans to win big in 2022-23, they’ll need to go all-in on offense.
It’s a gamble that ought to pay off. A starting lineup of Conley, McCollum, Brandon Ingram, Zion Williamson, and Jonas Valanciunas may have more point production potential than any other in the NBA.

They’ll cede a lot of points, but on an average night, they’ll more than make up the difference.
