Why The Brooklyn Nets Do The Deal

Make no mistake: this deal makes the Brooklyn Nets worse in the short term.

There’s no denying that. Andrew Wiggins, Jonathan Kuminga, and Jordan Poole will not combine to make up Kevin Durant’s powers. Still, it puts them in a better position for the future.

More importantly, it does so without tanking their present. That’s a priority for these Nets. They owe their first-round picks to the Houston Rockets through to 2027, so they’ve got no incentive to bottom out.

Following this trade, they wouldn’t need to. Wiggins and Poole are ready to contribute from day one, and they both happen to complement current Net Ben Simmons. The Nets will be worse in 2022-23 following this deal, but they should still find themselves in the mix for the playoffs.
