Over the weekend, the New York Knicks and Utah Jazz reportedly re-engaged in trade talks centered around NBA All-Star Donovan Mitchell. While a deal isn’t imminent, the teams have begun some fresh negotiations.
While the Knicks are considered the favorites to land the three-time All-Star and a lot of the focus has been on them, they are not the only team that is still pursuing him. The Washington Wizards and Charlotte Hornets were also mentioned as teams that were still interested in acquiring Mitchell.
Over at ESPN700, the Mitchell trade talks have been a popular discussion. Host Spence Checketts had Jazz reported Andy Larsen on recently and shared an interesting tidbit with him.
“I was told by a source that the Jazz actually have a couple of offers, that I was told are from other teams outside of NY that they like an awful lot…“
This sounds like posturing by the Jazz as Danny Ainge is looking to create some leverage in trade talks. If there are offers that Utah brass likes so much, why haven’t they accepted one of those deals instead of re-engaging in negotiations with the Knicks?
Ainge is a notoriously difficult negotiator to work with and is normally panned as the winner in any deal that he makes. However, it sounds like the Knicks, led by Leon Rose, Scott Perry and William Wesley, are playing hardball just as much and won’t budge off of their offer.
This has led to an impasse once and to avoid another one, the Jazz seem to be using the media as a negotiating tactic. The Knicks know that they have the most assets to offer and unless a team such as the Toronto Raptors goes all-in, which is unlikely as they are still pursuing Kevin Durant, they have no reason to make more assets available.
Utah could very well be a victim of their success from the Rudy Gobert trade with the Minnesota Timberwolves. They received so much in return for him that they are seeking out at least as much, if not more, for Mitchell.
