Firstly, the Boston Celtics only do this deal if Jaylen Brown angles to get out of town. Otherwise, they’ll invariably prefer to enter 2022-23 with the same core that just made a trip to the Finals.

For argument’s sake, let’s assume that the potential Durant deal soured the relationship permanently. Let’s also assume that the Durant deal falls through on Brooklyn’s end. With those assumptions in mind, does Boston do this deal?

They might. For what it’s worth, they’re getting a lot in return here. Turner would give them an element of rim protection they didn’t have in 2021-22. Granted, Robert Williams III’s defensive versatility may be even more valuable, but given Turner’s ability to stretch the floor, the two should be able to share the floor.

Finally, Buddy Hield and three first-round picks are not small potatoes either. In all likelihood, the Celtics won’t use those picks to draft players. They’re far more likely to try to re-route them for Jayson Tatum’s next co-star instead.
