The Kevin Durant trade saga has taken yet another twist. After issuing an ultimatum to the Brooklyn Nets and he had to shut down reports that surfaced saying he would rather retire than play for the Nets again, one NBA team was seemingly emerging as a landing spot.

The Boston Celtics in recent weeks felt like they were taking the lead when it came to acquiring Durant. The two sides have reportedly had some discussions centered around Durant and Jaylen Brown, who has been the best player in trade scenarios thus far.

The Nets’ first proposal was for Brown and Jayson Tatum, which Boston declined. Boston countered with Brown, Derrick White and picks for Durant, which Brooklyn declined. Brooklyn was seeking Marcus Smart to be included as well.

While the timeline of when those discussions were held was up for debate, it doesn’t sound like things progressed very far at all. Durant has been working out with Tatum, which led to more speculation about a deal progressing, but that does not seem to be the case. According to the Boston Globe, sources have indicated that the teams are not close to a Durant trade at this time.

“With the start of training camp just six weeks away, league sources continue to insist that the Celtics are not close to a deal that would bring Kevin Durant to Boston, and that there have not even been any real discussions of substance.”

While this could very well be some posturing from each side, it is likely true that things aren’t close. The Nets have a sky-high asking price for Durant as owner Joe Tsai wants to acquire as many assets as possible in a return package.

The Celtics, coming off a trip to the NBA Finals, know they have a very strong roster that they have upgraded with Danilo Gallinari and Malcolm Brogdon this offseason. While Durant is an incredible player, how much of the team’s depth is worth parting ways with in exchange for him?

Negotiations are likely to continue in the coming weeks as training camp closes in. That is likely a soft deadline for a deal to get done, as the teams will not want to deal with the distractions once preparations for the regular season begin.
