As a general rule, NBA teams are divided into two camps – you’ve got win-now clubs, and rebuilding clubs. Typically, teams in one camp don’t operate as those in another do.
There are good reasons for that. Teams who don’t have enough established talent to compete for the NBA championship need to focus on the future. Acquiring win-now talent normally costs future-focused assets.
Meanwhile, the inverse is also true. Teams contending for an NBA title can’t afford to think about the future. The window to win an NBA championship is narrow, and you need to push all in to make it through.
With all that being said, rules are sometimes made to be broken. The Houston Rockets have been the worst team in the NBA for two consecutive seasons.
