Why The Brooklyn Nets Do The Deal
To justify this deal for the Brooklyn Nets, you first have to imagine a hypothetical. How fair would this deal be if Anthony Davis had a bounce-back season in 2022-23?
After all, that’s the outcome the Nets would be banking on here. If he did reach his former levels of production, this could be the best offer they’d receive for Kevin Durant. Keep in mind, of course, that Durant has already issued a trade request.
In essence, the Nets have to trade him. With that in mind, Anthony Davis, a huge expiring contract, two young players, two first-round picks and two swaps is great value – if they’re getting the Anthony Davis of old.
Of course, Durant isn’t the only outgoing piece here. Kyrie Irving is headed to Tinsel Town as well. All the same, Irving’s off-court antics have significantly impacted his trade value. It’s fair to assume that he’s a distressed asset by now.

If his market value is as low as it looks, that may not dissuade the Nets. They’re taking a huge gamble on Davis’ health here, but if it works out, this trade will justify itself.
