Why The Los Angeles Lakers Do The Deal
Of course, it’s fair to say Davis isn’t even the biggest obstacle the Lakers face in terms of success in 2022-23. That distinction belongs to Russell Westbrook.
Unfortunately, the Lakers won’t receive value for Westbrook unless they attach draft capital to his contract. If they can, moving him and keeping Davis could be the way to go.
With that said, this deal has them actually improving their future asset base. Davion Mitchell was a lottery pick in 2021 and justified his selection last season. Meanwhile, the Lakers actually receive some draft capital here instead of surrendering it.
Still, the Lakers also improve their fit alongside Westbrook with this deal. Harrison Barnes’ frontcourt spacing should benefit him. As a non-shooter, Holmes may not, but he’ll be a great backup for stretch big Thomas Bryant when Westbrook sits.
