Why The Indiana Pacers Do The Deal
The Indiana Pacers are rebuilding. For that reason, getting a first-round pick for Myles Turner is inherently a good decision.
A specific look at their roster further justifies the move. Isaiah Jackson emerged as a high-potential player during his 2021-22 rookie campaign. He’s a center. Furthermore, the Pacers just recommitted to the 22-year-old Jalen Smith. He’s slated to start at the power forward position, but he’ll need reps at center as well.
That’s starting to look like a logjam. Moving Turner would make room for the younger players in the rotation. Moreover, he may not feel so comfortable as a Pacer anymore.
After all, this club tendered a max rookie extension offer to Deandre Ayton. The Suns matched it, but Turner now knows, on no uncertain terms, that the team was willing to replace him.

In light of those circumstances, the Pacers may be better off avoiding any potential awkwardness and re-routing Turner this summer regardless.
