Why The Dallas Mavericks Do The Deal
The Dallas Mavericks stumbled upon found money when they trade Kristaps Porzingis away for Davis Bertans and Spencer Dinwiddie.
While neither of their acquisitions excelled in their new home, the reshuffling of offensive responsibilities and lineup configurations did have a positive effect on the Mavericks. Porzingis’ departure played a heavy hand in Jalen Brunson’s ascension to a near-max contract player.
The Mavs also discovered that Luka Doncic might operate best if he has another offensive ball handling threat featuring alongside him, someone who can create for themselves and others while hitting tough looks against the shot clock when needed.
Kyrie Irving happened to play that role to perfection alongside LeBron James with the Cleveland Cavaliers. Along with the Christian Wood addition, this trade would vault the Mavericks towards the forefront of the title conversation in the Western Conference.

The only question mark surrounding this trade would be Kyrie Irving’s availability, willingness to play, and commitment to the game should he be dealt off of the Brooklyn Nets and away from one of his best friends. If Ky’s locked in, he and Luka would form one of the most offensively gifted backcourts in NBA history.
