Why The New Orleans Pelicans Do The Deal

At the same time, maybe that question isn’t so difficult to answer. After all, every rumor suggests Brandon Ingram would be the one packing his bags for Brooklyn.

Perhaps the Pelicans would be wiser to take the gamble. For what it’s worth, a Durant/Ingram/CJ McCollum furled offense would certainly contend for the NBA championship.

Still, plugging in a healthy, maximized Williamson for Ingram could make them title favorites.

It’s not hard to imagine how this offense would function. Williamson’s capacity to score inside at will forces the defense to collapse. At the same time, a collapsed defense with Kevin Durant and McCollum on the wings doesn’t stand a chance.

Furthermore, using Williamson as the roll man with either as the lead ball-handler should be just as problematic for opposing teams.

Following this deal, there will be a lot riding on Williamson’s health. Suddenly, the Pelicans would go from having roughly a ten-year title window to a two-year one.

At the same time, this deal could be interpreted as an overture to Williamson as much as anything else – he’d never be able to question their desire to win if they made it.
