Why The Brooklyn Nets Do The Deal
Many fans will be expecting the Brooklyn Nets to seek a package featuring more draft capital than this. Of course, any amount of draft capital is more than zero.
They simply don’t deserve it in this trade. The Heat are trading Bam Adebayo and Tyler Herro for Kevin Durant. That’s two players under 25 with star potential – they can’t be expected to give up draft capital in addition.
Meanwhile, the Hawks are essentially flipping John Collins for Ben Simmons. Simmons may be more talented, but in light of questions about his durability and commitment to the game, it doesn’t feel like they should owe draft capital here either.
Furthermore, it feels like the Nets don’t intend on bottoming out. Team owner Joe Tsai is on record stating that he’d be proud to own a play-in team with a competitive spirit.

This deal ought to at least get the Nets that far: Depending on what happens with Kyrie Irving, it could keep them out of the play-in altogether, and directly into the playoffs.
