The Brooklyn Nets had high expectations when they acquired Kevin Durant and Kyrie Irving to form the NBA’s next superstar duo. Given they were the only team to be swept in the first-round this year’s NBA playoffs, changes were expected.
Durant requested a trade in the hours before the official open of NBA free agency. He provided a list of preferred destinations that included the Phoenix Suns and Miami Heat. Given the Nets’ high asking price for a trade involving a two-time NBA Finals MVP still signed for four seasons, no deal has transpired.
How the Nets handled Kyrie Irving’s contract extension negotiations appears to have been a catalyst in the situation worsening. The team was unwilling to sign him long-term, so Irving instead opted to exercise his $36.1 million player option.
Over a whole month has gone by since Durant requested his trade, and he remains on the roster. According to Shams Charania of The Athletic, Kevin Durant and team owner Joe Tsai met face-to-face to discuss his future with the team. Durant reiterated his trade request and made clear the organization needs to choose between him or both general manager Sean Marks and coach Steve Nash going forward,

Charania also reported that Durant has ‘no faith’ in the Nets’ current direction under Sean Marks and Steve Nash. Given the start of training camp is beginning is increasingly near, Brooklyn may need to act fast in how they handle the situation, one way or another.
