Why The Utah Jazz Do The Deal
From the strict perspective of draft capital, the Jazz may not be satisfied here. We can assume Mitchell has more trade value than Gobert. He’s four years younger, and offensive stars generally fetch a larger return than defensive ones.
In that vacuum, the Jazz don’t do well here. They’re receiving the same number of picks for Mitchell as they did for Gobert, save for an extra pick swap. With that said, this deal looks good for them with additional context.
Firstly, they’re receiving better young players than they did for Gobert here. Jarred Vanderbilt is good, but the combined value of Obi Toppin and Immanuel Quickley is significantly higher.
More importantly, they’re getting better draft capital as well. The 2024 Lakers pick they’re landing from New Orleans is especially juicy.
