The Utah Jazz are not holding back when it comes to trade negotiations centered around NBA All-Star Donovan Mitchell. Danny Ainge knows this is his chance to acquire a ton of assets, and he is going to get as many as he possibly can.

Thus far, talks have been materializing slowly with Mitchell, similarly to how things were going with the Brooklyn Nets for Kevin Durant. Both organizations are trading very good players and want to make sure they are compensated in a way to reflect that.

While the directions of the franchises are different, as the Nets want to remain competitive and the Jazz are heading toward a rebuild, they both want to maximize their return package. For Utah, that means as many building blocks as possible.

Just how much are they looking for in return? According to Michael Scotto of HoopsHype, Utah has set an astronomical asking price for their three-time All-Star.

According to multiple NBA executives who’ve spoken to the Jazz about trading for Donovan Mitchell, Utah is seeking as many draft picks as possible and isn’t prioritizing win-now players. Utah is looking to land a bigger haul for Mitchell than the Rudy Gobert trade that netted four first-round picks and 2022 first-rounder Walker Kessler from Minnesota, league sources told HoopsHype. There’s belief it’ll take five or even six first-round picks to land Mitchell.

The Knicks are one team that can meet that asking price, as they have eight tradeable draft picks at their disposal right now. However, they have shown zero interest in parting ways with all of their draft capital, especially if Utah is expecting to receive some of their young players, such as Obi Toppin, Quentin Grimes or Immanuel Quickley as well.

Right now, New York is considered the favorite to land Mitchell. The Knicks and Jazz are a good matchup trade asset wise but there is still plenty of work to do when it comes to negotiations.

Leon Rose is determined to land a star player and has the assets to do so. Ainge is a notoriously difficult negotiator and will look to get as much value as possible in exchange for Mitchell, who is one of the best young players in the league.
