Why The Los Angeles Lakers Do The Deal
Julius Randle is a bit of a puzzle. The disparity between his last two seasons is so wide that it’s hard to know exactly what his trade value is.
His 2020-21 season landed him on the All-NBA Third Team. It was a breakout year for the league’s Most Improved Player. Unfortunately, his 2021-22 season was so poor that he’s now generally seen as being on the Knicks’ chopping block.
Much of the gap between the two seasons is owed to three-point accuracy. Randle was one of the league’s foremost snipers in 2020-21. In 2021-22, he couldn’t toss the ball through the 0 in the Hollywood sign. Can the Lakers afford to gamble on his return to form?
Frankly, yes. Randle’s three-point accuracy in 2021-22 was right in-line with a strong season on Westbrook’s standards. Even in a very worst-case scenario, he’ll improve this team’s spacing.

If he can even split the difference between his last two seasons, he’ll improve it dramatically. In that event, look for him to improve their win/loss record in the process.
